The main types of scars are atrophic, hypertrophic, icepick, rolling and box scars. In atrophic scars there is loss of collagen while hypertrophic and keloidal scars are associated with excessive collagen deposition and decreased collagenase activity. Several classification and grading system have been proposed to grade the severity of scars and to treat accordingly.
